The Helias boys’ basketball team is poised to take to the hardwood for action this winter following a season highlighted by a 24-6 record and a class 4, 3rd place showing in the Final Four. The Crusaders’ starting lineup returns a nucleus that averaged 30+ points in Jr. Zach Rockers, (’08-’09 1st team All-District, 2nd team All-State), and Sr. Danny Feldmann (’08-’09 1st team All-District, 2nd team All-State). However, a significant asset to the squad in terms of both leadership and statistics, Sr. Taylor Heislen (’08-’09 1st team All-District), is sidelined for the season after sustaining a knee injury during football. Thus, the Crusaders will look to a few other returning letter winners and newcomers to fill the shoes left by five comprehensively successful ’08-’09 graduates. In an effort to do so, the basketball team’s summer and offseason consisted of a championship in the big school division at Mizzou basketball camp, a medal performance at the Mid-America Summer Hoops Classic in Murray, KY, and an active participation in a combination of Mizzou and the University of North Carolina’s weights and conditioning program. Competing against a toughened schedule that comprises at least eleven class 4 foes, including the Missouri state champs, and eight class 5 opponents in the ’09-’10 season, the coaching staff and ‘Sader boys basketball team, led by Coach Buffington who enters his 2nd year as Helias’ head coach and 9th overall, are primed to continue last season’s accomplishments and further add to the successful legacy and tradition of the program.
