The Crusaders could not get anything going against the Kewpies of Hickman Friday night as they found themselves battling uphill all night long, falling behind 21-6 at the end of 1^st quarter play. Helias lost the game by a final score of 64-40 on Senior night for Hickman. Freshman Hale Hentges led the Crusaders with 16 points. The Crusaders will take on the Tigers of Kirksville Friday night when they will honor 6 Seniors. Helias falls to 16-7 on the season.

Wednesday, February 8th, vs. Smith-Cotton (Away)

Helias has a huge 4^th quarter out scoring the Tigers of Sedalia 15-6 during the final frame. Deion Hughes led the way once again with 21 points and 10 boards, Josh Smith tallied 14 (9 for 9 from the ft line), and Hale Hentges added 11 points respectively. The Saders jump to 16-6 on the year with the road win.

Friday, February 3rd, vs. Eldon (Home)

In what turned out to be a battle for the #1 seed in Districts, the Crusaders “showed up” when taking on the Mustangs from Eldon. In a competitive game with many lead changes, the Crusaders would have the last hoorah (Thanks to Leon Vanderfeltz)! Led by a balanced scoring attack, Josh Smith tallied 17 points, Deion Hughes 15, Hale Hentges 12 and Aaron Vossen 10. Helias won the contest 62-50 and move to 15-6 on the season.

Tuesday, January 31st, vs. Mexico (Away)

The Crusaders came up on the short end at the home of the Mexico Bulldogs. Mexico, ranked #8 in class four, pulled away late to beat Helias 50-39. Deion Hughes scored 20 points while Hale Hentges added 9 in the losing effort. The loss takes Helias to 14-6 on the year.

Sunday, January 29th, vs. Fatima (Mizzou Arena, MFA Shootout)

Helias holds the Comets of Fatima to only 7 points in the first half in route to a 48-33 victory at the Mizzou Arena on Sunday afternoon. Josh Smith led the way with 14 points while Deion Hughes chipped in with 12 of his own. The Crusaders are now 14-5 on the season.

Friday, January 27th, vs. Moberly (Home)

Helias controlled the game Friday night when taking on the Spartans from Moberly. The Spartans entered the contest with a season clip of 13-4. Deion Hughes led the way with a huge night by scoring 22 points and hauling in 10 rebounds. Josh Smith was also in double figures with 10 points. The Crusaders have won 9 of their last 10 pushing their record to 13-5 on the year.

Tuesday, January 24th, vs. Hannibal (Home)

Helias was victorious over the #10 Class 4 State Ranked Hannibal Pirates Tuesday night inside Rackers Fieldhouse. Led by Senior Josh Smith, the Crusaders were able to finish the 4^th quarter on a 12-2 run to ice the victory with a 68-59 win. Josh ended the night with 23 points. Deion Hughes chipped in with 15 of his own while Hale Hentges tallied 11 points. Also nearing double figure scoring was Senior Aaron Vossen who added 9 points. The Crusaders have now won 8 of their last 9 games and will host Moberly again at home on Friday night. Helias moves to 12-5 on the season.

Saturday, January 21st, vs. Logan-Rogersville (Camdenton Shootout)

Helias Crusaders winning streak comes to an end. The ‘Saders found themselves on the losing end today as they were beat by Logan Rogersville 67-53. Due to a slow start, the Crusaders found themselves in a halftime deficit they could not recover from. “You can learn a lot more from a loss than you can from a win. We will refocus, and do our best to fix the components we struggled with today, mostly on the defensive end,” stated Coach Buffington. Josh Smith had a big offensive game with 20 points and Hale Hentges had 15 of his own before fouling out with 4 minutes remaining. Helias falls to 11-5 on the year.

Friday, January 20^th, vs. Fulton (Away) – 7 in a row for Helias! The Crusaders used a big second half to knock off the Fulton Hornets on the road Friday night by the score of 59-48. Trailing by 1 at the break, the Crusaders knew they were in for a different ball game than the first time these two teams met. Hale Hentges and Josh Smith led the way with 13 and 12 points respectively. Helias is now 11-4 on the season.

Tuesday, January 17^th, vs. Jefferson City (Away) – 6 in a row for Helias! The Crusaders dominated the “Cross Town Showdown” in great fashion with a 62-52 win over the Jefferson City Jays. Josh Smith and Deion Hughes led the charge with 19 points apiece. Josh tallied 6 rebounds. Hale Hentges had a career night in scoring by totaling 16 points. He also led the way on the boards with 7 rebounds. This is the 5^th straight win in the rivalry contest for Helias over JC. Deion Hughes made the shot heard around the world by drilling a 70 footer at the buzzer before halftime. This shot was aired on ESPN Sportscenter as a top 10 play! Helias moves to 10-4 on the season.

Saturday, January 14^th, vs. Southern Boone (California Tourney) – 5 in a row for Helias! The ‘Saders are victorious and crowned champions of the 75^th annual California Tourney with a 52-50 win over the Southern Boone Eagles. Clinging to a 14 point lead midway through the 4^th quarter, the Eagles made a fierce run at Helias but the Crusaders hung on. Deion Hughes had 15, Josh Smith 14 and Hale Hentges 13 for the winners. Helias moves to 9-4 on the year.

Thursday, January 12, vs. California (California Tourney)

Four in a row for Helias! The Crusaders used a dominating opening 12 minutes to capture a 59-47 victory over the host school Pintos in semi-final action of the traditional tournament. Senior Josh Smith, who is riding a hot streak, led the ‘Saders with 25 points. Deion Hughes chipped in with 14 points, 7 rebounds. Hale Hentges tied for rebounding honors with 7 of his own. Helias will play Southern Boone in the finals as they upset Class 4 State Ranked Mexico 54-50 in the other semi-final contest. The Crusaders are now 8-4.

Helias ripped Fulton 64-32 in the first round of the 75^th Annual California Tourney. All 10 Crusaders saw significant action in the victory. Deion Hughes had a huge 12 minute span to help lead the Crusaders. He ended the night with 16 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. Freshman Hale Hentges had a career night, totaling 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 blocks. The Crusaders are back in action Thursday night when they take on the host school in semi-final action. Game time is set for 7:30 pm. Helias, winners of 3 straight, are now 7-4 on the year.

Saturday, January 7th, vs. Chaminade (Cardinal Ritter Classic)

Helias took on the Perennial Class 5 Power Red Devils of Chaminade today in a great venue at Cardinal Ritter H.S. The Crusaders came away with a huge win in overtime by the score of 56-49. Leading all scorers again was Josh Smith with 23. Josh carried the Crusaders in overtime scoring 9 of the team’s 12 points in a 4 minutes span. “We stubbed our toe a bit in the 4^th quarter after controlling the game for the first 3 quarters. Thankfully, we found a way to get it in to overtime, and really dominated the extra period. Our guys were excited to get this one” said Coach Buff. Helias travels to California next week as a 2 seed in their tournament. The Crusaders are now 6-4 on the season.

Friday, January 6th, vs. St. Dominic (Away)

The ‘Saders traveled to O’Fallon, MO to take on the Crusaders of St. Dominic. It was a great night on the court as Helias handled St. Dom by the score of 54-26. Josh Smith sizzled the nets with 6 three point baskets. Smith totaled 18 points on the night. “Josh really set the tone for us. He has really gone through an uncharacteristic shooting slump as of late, but he has never quit working, or quit shooting” said Coach Buff. “He can really carry us when he is hot.” Helias had 21 assists on the night, with 9 players scoring. The Crusaders move to 5-4.

Wednesday – Friday, December 28-30th, Kehoe Great 8 Christmas Tourney (JCHS)

Helias vs. Blair Oaks - The Crusaders ended the 4^th Quarter on a 12-2 spurt to finish off the Undefeated Blair Oaks Falcons 46-36 in the 1^st Round of the Kehoe Classic. All 2500 plus in attendance would have to agree this was a great game to be a part of. “This was the most physical game we’ve played in to this point. Emotions were running high for 32 Minutes and I felt our guys did a great job at feeding off their emotions in a positive way. Our guys will remember this atmosphere for quite some time. It was a solid win for our program” stated Coach Buff. Deion Hughes led Helias Catholic with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Seniors Josh Smith and Aaron Vossen ended the night with 10 points respectively. Helias moves to 4-2 on the year.

Helias vs. Rockbridge – Helias falls to Columbia Rockbridge 74-38 in 2^nd Round Action at Flemming Fieldhouse. “Things just snowballed on us tonight. Our kids understand they just weren’t in the right mindset to compete with a high level team like Rockbridge tonight. We need to learn from it, move on, and respond tomorrow night against another very talented team” said Coach Buff. Senior Josh Smith and Freshman Hale Hentges tied for scoring honors on the evening with 8 points apiece. The Crusaders fall to 4-3 on the season.

Helias vs. Fayetteville, Arkansas – The Crusaders battled to the end but fell short to Fayetteville 44-38 in the 3^rd Place Game of the Kehoe Classic. “Our players showed a great amount of integrity tonight coming off what may have been one of the tougher losses of their career at Helias.” I’m very proud of the fight they showed, and although we came out on the losing end, we took a step forward tonight. This one could jumpstart us to putting together a nice run” stated Coach Buff. Deion Hughes led the Crusaders in scoring with 11. Tied for rebounding honors were Deion Hughes and Hale Hentges with 7 each. Helias falls to 4-4 on the season.

Friday, December 16th , vs. Branson (Home)

The Crusaders beat the Branson Pirates 50-29 in a tremendous defensive effort Friday night at Rackers Fieldhouse. “Our guys did a great job of responding to a tough loss in a game they wanted extremely bad. I was proud of our defensive intensity tonight as a team, both physically and mentally” said Coach Buff. Senior Deion Hughes led the way again with 16 points and 7 rebounds. The Crusaders are back in action for the Mike Kehoe Great 8 Classic held at Jefferson City High School December 28-30. Their first round match-up will be a treat for fans, as Helias takes on Blair Oaks at 7 pm. The ‘Saders jump to 3-2 on the season.

Thursday, December 8th vs. St. Francis Borgia

The Crusaders came up short in a Defensive Battle to the Knights of St. Francis Borgia, 32-25. Borgia is currently ranked 4^th in Missouri, Class 4. “We had our chances to extend the lead. Our guys really executed the gameplan perfectly on both ends. We just could not get that big shot to go down.” Stated Coach Buff. “We need to dig down and realize that our defense must stay consistent through scoring droughts. Shooting is a strength of this team and our guys will come out with confidence next Friday night.” Senior Deion Hughes led the Crusaders once again with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Hale Hentges tallied 7 rebounds on the night. Helias is back in action at Rackers Fieldhouse Friday, December 16^th. JV tipoff is at 6:00 pm.

Saturday, December 3^rd, vs. Marshfield (Buffalo Tourney)

Helias falls to Marsfield 53-45 in the Championship of the Buffalo Tournament. “We were playing ‘catch up’ the entire game.” Marshfield jumped out to an early 13-2 lead. Two timeouts later, the Crusaders showed up. “It would have been easy to tank it, but our guys showed a lot of fight, that is definitely a positive. We know what we need to fix and realize that we have some weaknesses that were exposed a bit tonight. I’m confident in our team and player leadership and know we will bounce back,” states Coach Buff. Deion Hughes had another big night in the losing effort with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Named to the All-Tournament Team for Helias were Seniors Deion Hughes and Josh Smith.
