Freshmen and sophomores -- Academic team is looking for students who enjoy fast paced competition testing your knowledge.  If you like games such as Jeopardy and Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, Academic Team might be for you.  If you are interested in discovering more about this fun activity, come to a meeting this Thursday right after school in the library for about an hour.  We will set up and play an actual game so you can see how it works.  If you are interested but unable to come on Thursday because of a fall sport or other commitment, come by the library and talk to Ms. Swoyer.

Band

Concert Band:  The Concert Band is the chief instrumental ensemble at Helias.  The Concert band meets from October through May and involves all students involved in the band program.  The ensemble plays a wide range of music, both in style and difficulty.  The Concert Band gives at least 3 public performances every school year.  The Concert Band also participates every year in the MSHSAA State Music Festival.  The Concert Band periodically travels out-of-town, most recently to the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, FL.

Marching Band:  The Marching Crusaders are the most visible ensemble in the Helias Music Department, performing at numerous local events, parades, and football games every year.  The Marching Crusaders maintain a busy competition schedule, competing in 4-5 out-of-town competitions each year.  The Marching Crusaders are comprised of members of the Concert Band, as well as additional Helias students who are a member of the Helias Color Guard.  The Marching Band meets from June through October, plus the annual Christmas parade in December.  The Marching Crusaders have competed at numerous college bowl games throughout the country, including the Gator Bowl (Jacksonville, FL) the Cotton Bowl (Dallas, TX), the Alamo Bowl (San Antonio, TX), the Copper Bowl (Tucson, AZ), and the Peach Bowl (Atlanta, GA).

Drumline:  A subset of the Marching Crusaders, the Helias Drumline in recent years has started learning and performing a second show in addition to the full Marching Crusader field show.  The Drumline is not for percussionists only.

Color Guard:  The Color Guard is responsible for filling the field with color during the field show.  The Color Guard is comprised of Helias students who may not play an instrument but still want to be involved with the excitement that is marching band.  The Color Guard rehearses with the rest of the Marching Crusaders from June through early-December.

Woodwind Choir:  The woodwind choir is a relatively new ensemble at Helias, starting in January of 2008.  This ensemble is comprised of students from the Concert Band who meet twice a week to learn additional music.  The music is for woodwinds only (Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Saxophone, and Bassoon), allowing for different challenges than what is typically presented in a typical concert band setting.  The Woodwind Choir, like the Concert Band, participates in the MSHSAA State Music Festival.

Jazz Band:  The Jazz Band is an important ensemble at Helias and any high school, as it helps students become acquainted with a truly American art form.  Students in Jazz Band learn a variety of jazz styles, including the unique jazz characteristics of swing, syncopation, and improvisation.  The Jazz Band meets after the conclusion of the Marching Crusaders’ season through May.  The Jazz Band performs at numerous local venues, as well as the occasional out-of-town competition.

Musical Orchestra: The Helias spring musical would not be complete without the addition of instrumental music; music that is provided by the orchestra.  The Music Orchestra is comprised of Helias Concert Band students, Helias alumni, and Jefferson City community musicians.  The music for this orchestra is often more difficult than typical high school level music, providing a unique challenge to participating students.

Book Club

The book club is an organization open to freshman through seniors.  Students meet once a month to discuss a book selected by the students.  The club is not necessarily for “brainiacs, but for those who enjoy reading.”  The monthly meetings are a very relaxed way to meet with others to discuss a novel on a level that the group chooses.  You will meet new people and read books that you may not have chosen on your own, so the club opens you to a variety of new things.

Journalism Club

The Helias Journalism Club is now in its fourth year of newspaper production, after many decades of inactivity. Helias President Didier Aur spearheaded its rebirth. Over the last two years, Helias English teacher Brandon Martin has ran the club and has seen a steady increase in members and quality writing. The student newspaper during its first two years was an online paper—The Crusader Rabbit, but now, the club also creates a print newspaper called the Crusader Raid.

Plans for printing five Crusader Raids over the 2009-2010 school year is the goal the club set for itself. To pick up a copy simply ask the business office or email Mr. Brandon Martin at bmartin@heliashs.com.

Any student is allowed to join the club. And not only writers are needed. Photographers, graphic designers, artists, editors, and basically just peppy people are encouraged to join. Currently the club has a membership of around 80 members.

To view the Crusader Rabbit, simply click on this link: users.heliashighschool.com/users/rabbit/

Questions, concerns, story ideas, and compliments can be sent to bmartin@heliashs.com.

Thundercats

Thundercats Book Club

Do you like to eat, spend time with a group of fun people, read, and talk about books?  Then Thundercats Book Club may be for you.  Thundercats is a very lively, informal group that meets monthly at 5:45 in the library to talk about a book you select.  Anyone can suggest a book, and the group votes on the book to read for the following month.  Members take turns coming up with questions and leading the discussion for a book, but no one has to lead if he or she feels uncomfortable doing so.  Students from every grade level are welcome.  Oh yes, eating – we buy Little Caesar’s pizza (entirely optional but cheap) to munch while talking, or you are welcome to bring your own food.   Come check us out or talk to Ms. Swoyer in the library for more information.

The March meeting will be on Wednesday, March 31, right after school in the library.  This is the last day of classes before Easter break and we have a 1:00 dismissal.  The book is Sphere by Michael Crichton.
